We call ourselves civilised. But we cannot even provide a safe environment for our kids. Here are certain facts about child abuse that we all should know.

* It is not just strangers but even close family members might resort to child abuse.

* The emotional damage is more severe and long term if the abuser is someone the victim trusted.

* A vast majority of child abuse victims do not share their story with anyone even after they reach adulthood.

* The child abuse victims have difficulty in trusting and loving people. This could lead to relationship problems later.

* With due respect to good step fathers, girl children are more at risk when they are brought up in step father homes.

Please understand that their wounds can be healed and the abuse victims deserve a good life. Let us do our bit to support their cause.
